More Roma in schools in Vojvodina

Office for Roma Inclusion in Vojvodina presented the results achieved in 100 days of work, firstly in the area of education. Office director Duško Jovanović said that he was partially satisfied with the achieved results. At the press conference he expressed his satisfaction by the fact that 156 Roma children enrolled high school and that 27 young people enrolled faculties at the territory of Vojovodina. He also added that accommodation was provided for a number of these students. Jovanović said that the Office prepared, in cooperation with other Roma organizations, a project of providingscholarships for Roma high school children in Vojvodina. The project is a million dollars worth and is being realized in cooperation with organization REF from Budapest.
Jovanović, however, expressed concern about the problem of providing textbooks for Roma elementary schoolchildren in most municipalities in Vojvodina, stating that solving of this problem would be one of Office's priorities in future. According to him, the Office launched many projects and initiatives regarding improvement of Roma housing conditions and employment.
The Office for Roma Inclusion was opened in May 2006 by the Executive Council of Vojvodina, with the aim of including in project of the World Decade of Roma. It began to work in May 2007.
